CAI has watched the success and shortfalls of smart growth/growth management in communities across the country. We have developed 10 transportation principles for smart growth planning and work with clients to implement sensible plans.

Ho'opili, West Oahu Hawaii

On March 9-16, Terri Musser and Jim Charlier participated in a community planning charrette hosted by Maui Land & Pine and A&B Properties for the village of Hāli‘imaile - a former plantation camp envisioned to accommodate affordable housing and sustainable growth in Upcountry Maui.

Hawaii DOT Transportation Planning Workshops

Charlier Associates has been assisting the Hawaii DOT with a series of transportation planning workshops designed to seek alternatives to the inexorable widening of state highways in the face of rapid growth. HDOT has referred to these as “connectivity workshops” because one of the major themes to emerge has been the need to develop more complete and connected road and street networks as a better solution than over-reliance on massive arterials. more…

City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii - Ewa Smart Growth Transportation Policies

The Ewa area has natural features that are critical to preserve.

CAI developed a smart growth transportation plan for Ewa area of O’hau. The Ewa plain on the leeward side of O'hau will be the site of a “second city” for Honolulu – an area designated for extensive development providing for urban growth to accommodate anticipated increases in the island’s population. more…
